By tram to Prague Castle. Where do I get off?

At which tram stop should I get off if I want to visit Prague Castle?

There are several tram stops around the immense castle complex in the city of Prague. Where is the best place to get off is a question you often hear.

If you want to visit Prague Castle, it is obvious to take tram 22 or 23 to the stop “Pražský hrad”. When approaching this stop, it is not without reason that the tram announces “exit here for Prague Castle”. However, is this the best choice? Not at all, because if you really want to get a good impression of the entire castle complex, it is best to stay for another 2 stops (coming from the city center) to the Pohořelec stop. When you get off at this stop you are immediately close to the famous Strahov Monastery known for its library. After a visit to the Strahov Monastery, which dates from the year 1138, you can walk via the famous Czernin Palace, the Loreta Monastery or via Loretánské námesti in the direction of the main entrance on Hradčanské námesti. If you walk through the Loreta monastery, don't forget to listen to the carillon consisting of 27 church bells from the Netherlands on the hour. Then you walk through the “Nový Svět” district towards the main entrance and you will immediately get an idea of what the famous “Golden Lane” in Prague Castle looks like.

Between April and the end of October it is also an option to leave the tram at the Královský letohrádek stop. This is the stop at our president's garden. From here you walk through the president's garden towards the side entrance of the castle. You read that correctly, you are actually walking through the president's garden and if you are lucky you will also find him at home in the garden. You will not be the first to have a chat with the current president “Petr Pavel”.

In addition to the 3 options mentioned, you can also walk up via the oldest access roads such as the “Staré zámecké schody”, but realize that the city of Prague is built on 7 hills and it is the best climb. Near the last mentioned access road you will also find a so-called deer path through nature that takes you to the main entrance via wooden floors and a tunnel in the middle of nature. For these access roads, leave the tram at the Malostranská stop.

In short, plenty of options, but as can be read, the most obvious option is the tram stop “Pražský hrad” so not the best place to get off the tram.
